Chateau Raceway 5/20

May 20, 2016  |  by Matthew Grage

It was back to racing Friday Night at Chateau Raceway after a week off for the weather. Sunshine and temperatures in the 70’s made for a perfect night for the third night of racing action at the track just north of Austin. A nice field of 78 cars were on hand for the six classes of cars on hand for the evenings action. Leading the way with 21 cars were the USRA B Mods and for the third straight time to open the season it was Kylie Kath of Owatonna who found himself in Victory Lane at the end of the night with another feature win. Kath came from the fourth row to run down early leader Jerry Young of Blooming Prairie. Seven cautions plagued the race with the first six cautions coming in the first six laps and being able to avoid the accidents helped Kylie get to the front eventually getting the lead off a restart. Brother Kadden Kath made his way up to second ahead of Jeremiah Christiansen who along with his son Cole pulled in from Sioux Falls South Dakota for the nights action. Heat wins went to Kadden Kath, Taylor Ausrud of Hayfield, and Scott Demmer of Ellendale.

The first half of the USRA A Mod feature belonged to Jason Cummins of New Richland who shot off the outside of the front row to grab the early lead. Jacob Bleess of Chatfield, who started on the pole fell in line second for the first 10 laps or so of the 25 lap main event before he started sticking his nose along side Jason. The two ran side by side for a few laps until Bleess took over the top spot and drove off to the win. Steve Wetzstein of West Concord patiently worked thru the field from row four catching Cummins and moving by him with 8 laps remaining. Cummins ended up third. Heat wins belonged to Brandon Davis of Medford and Greg Pfeifer JR of Brownsdale.

In WISSOTA Midwest Modified action Dan Wheeler of Savage wheeled his Red 1 machine to the front with a big move right off the drop of the green. Starting outside in row two he dropped right to the middle of the track and went three wide with the front row of Garritt Wytaske of Lansing and Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa, Coming out of turn two he left them behind and took control of the race. Dustin Steinbrink of Austin worked from row four up to second while Goergen held on for third ahead of Garritt. Wheeler also had a heat win on the night along with Goergen.

Also adding to his feature win total on the early season was Mike Blowers of Waseca in the WISSOTA Street Stock Class. Mike has all three of the feature wins in the class this year. Working with a row four starting spot he moved into fifth on the first lap and up to fourth a lap later. Off a restart he moved up to second on lap four and went to the lead a lap later. Zach Elward of Hayfield had a nice run coming home in second after starting back in the third row. The biggest mover of the race however was Kyle King of Hastings who came from row seven to come home third. King started tail end on the field after he was torn up on the initial start of his heat race at the start of the night. His crew put him back together and he put on a good show as he passed a lot of cars moving toward the front. Elward and Bernie Adams of Stacyville Iowa took the classes heat wins.

Mikes son Bobby Blowers of Waseca scored his first feature win of the season in the Hornet class. Coming from midpack of the ten car field he came to the front in just a hand full of laps moving past Terry Blowers of Waseca for the win. Marissa Wolff of Janesville rounded out the top three. Heat wins belonged to Terry Blowers and Ralph Hanks of Waseca.

Jason Newkirk of Austin owned the Pure Stock class for the night as he took home the heat win along with the feature win. Matt Brooks of Austin has the early lead before contact between him and Brandon Shaner of Owatonna dropped him back several spots. Shaner was black flagged for the contact but before he left the track he spun his car out and collected Brooks knocking him out of the race as well. From there it was a shootout between Jason and Daniel Guttormson of Austin. Newkirk took the win with Daniel taking second ahead of Chris Hotovec of Dodge Center.

Next week is one of the biggest shows every year at Chateau Raceway as it’s the 19th Annual Mike Guttormson Memorial. The track will be hosting the USMTS Modified Touring Series for an exciting night. Also on hand for the night will be three of the tracks regular classes, the USRA B Mods, the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and the Pure Stocks. Action scheduled to get underway at 7:00.
