Chateau Raceway 5/26/17

Memorial Day weekend is considered the official start of summer. At Chateau Raceway for the last 20 years its also been the weekend for the Mike Guttormson Memorial. Mike won multiple Championships and Features over the years at Lansing, his last feature came 20 years ago this month. After taking the checkered flag and getting the traditional photo taken in Victory Lane Mike went back to his trailer, where after getting out of his car collapsed from a heart condition and left a lot of friends and family missing a good friend and spirited competitor. Over the years the track has gone back and forth between running there own Memorial race or tieing in with another touring event for the night to celebrate Mikes dedication to racing and the track. This year the track ran there own special with Purse bumps for all classes. The USRA A Modified class purse was bumped up to $1083 dollars to win, the 83 in recognition of the number that Mike displayed on his car. Than they added $83 to the first place money for all the other classes competing. Mikes number was flipped around to 38 and used for the number of laps the A feature field would run instead of the usual 25.

It seems it wouldn’t be a Friday night this season without some threat of rain and the chance was there again this week. The track suffered its fifth weather related cancellation last week but this week belonged to the fans and drivers to enjoy a night at the track. 106 cars filled the pits for the nights action with the highlight of the night the USRA A Modified Guttormson Memorial Main Event.

The field lined up for the feature with Steve Wetzstein of West Concord drawing the pole alongside Keith Tourville of Webster IA. On the drop of the green Tourville grabbed the early advantage with Steve falling in line second ahead of Greg Pfeifer Jr of Austin and Jason Cummins of New Richland. Cummins, starting in row three, went by Pfeifer for third on lap three and set his sights on the leaders. Jason pulled up on Wetzstein and the two ran a few side by side laps before Cummins nosed ahead for the spot on lap ten. Tourville had built up a pretty nice lead but Cummins was flying as he quickly reeled him in and six laps later he was in the lead. In not much more than twelve minutes the field had completed a scorching 38 lap non stop – caution free main event. Cummins pace left just four cars on the lead lap when the checkers fell. Tourville held off Wetzstein for second with Pfeifer coming home in fourth. Cummins also picked up a heat win on the night as he scored the sweep with his first feature win of the season at Lansing. Joe Horgdahl of Kasson captured the classes other heat win.

A couple other classes showed some nice driving as well on the night running caution free main events. The Chateau Hornets were lead by Brian Adams of Shakopee who took the lead off the drop of the green and lead the field start to finish in a caution free feature. For Adams it was his third straight feature win to start the season. Marissa Wolff of Waseca came home in second ahead off Todd Tacheny of Mankato. Adams also won his heat as he was one of six drivers who scored sweeps on the night. The other heat win went to Tacheny.

The Outlaw Mini Mods who run an every other week schedule at the track were on hand for the second time this season and they also ran a caution free feature. Scott Johnson of Owatonna made a big move from row three to the front on the first lap. But he was only there for three laps as pole sitter Nathan Kilwine of Glenville who didn’t have the best of starts gathered himself back up and charged back to the front. Adam Ackerman worked past Johnson for second as the laps wound down. Kilwine also had a heat win and capped off his sweep with his first feature win at the track this season while Ackerman took the other heat.

Chateau Pure Stocks just missed having a caution free feature. A short caution on the initial start reset the field for a second go and they ran it clean from there for all fifteen laps. Brady Krohnberg of Walters who scored a win in his heat earlier in the night sailed to a sweep in the feature after starting on the pole. Brady jumped out ahead of Danielle Maas of Owatonna and left the field behind as he scored the win. Danielle eventually faded to fourth as Troy Maas of Faribault worked from deep in the field to come home second ahead of Jesse Stahl of Austin. Troy scored the classes other heat win.

WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds ran a clean feature on the night with Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa, starting on the outside of the front row, took the lead on the drop of the green and lead the field nonstop for eighteen fast paced laps. Dan Wheeler of Savage, who started right behind Ryan on the grid battled him tough the entire distance showing his nose underneath Goergen at both ends of the track lap after lap with the two never touching. Ryan did a nice job just holding his line and hitting his marks as he scored his first feature win of the season, backing up his heat win from earlier in the night. Robbie Franklin of Shakopee came home in third. Wheeler and Franklin also had heat wins on the night along with Jeremy Misgen of Ellendale.

With so many caution free, or near caution free features one would of thought it would have been a quick night but there always seems to be one or two races that don’t come off quite so clean. With 28 cars entered in the Midwest Modified Class there was a need for a B Main and you would of thought 12 cars and 12 laps wouldn’t take that long. Unfortunately caution after caution stretched the race out for well over a half hour if not 45 minutes. Laps were cut twice during the race, first five laps were taken off, than it was cut to a green-white-checker finish as the field hard a hard time getting past lap 5. Finally with less than half the field running and another caution the caution and checkered flags were waved sending the field to the pits. Darryl Hainka of Wannamingo survived the carnage with his first win of the season holding off Casey Trom of Zumbrota and Liz Toepper of Hugo.

The WISSOTA Street Stock class, which normally runs rather clean, quick features had there issues as well. Ken Adams of Stacyville Iowa took the lead off the drop of the green from the outside of the front row. Jason Newkirk, starting outside row two followed him up to second and put the heat on. Five laps in he made the move to the inside in turn four and moved to the lead with Ken Falling back to second just ahead of Kory Adams of Stacyville Iowa. Ken eventually fell out of the battle for the lead with his spot being taken by Mike Blowers of Waseca. The new trio put on some exciting laps pulling along side each other looking for room with it all culminating with an exciting three wide race for the lead. With Blowers looking to the outside of Newkirk for the lead Kory went to the bottom of both of them going from third to first. Shortly after the cautions starting coming. Those cautions eventually did in Blowers as he tried to make a big move on one of the restarts to get back to the front but spun into the infield grass ending his chance at victory. Kory held off Newkirk for the win with Ken Adams coming back for third. Kory also had a heat win on the night as he captured his firs wins of the season. Blowers also had a heat win on the night.

The USRA B Mods also gave the caution flag some extra use on the night with the worst of the yellows coming with three torn up cars in the middle of turn one. Jerry Young of Blooming Prairie ended up sideways in the middle of the track and with nowhere to go Tim Gerber of Austin and Anton Nelson of Hayfield ended up being collected. All three had there nights end with plenty of work ahead to put the cars back together for next week. Meanwhile Kadden Kath of Owatonna used a front row starting spot to his advantage as she lead flag to flag for his second feature win of the year. Jayden Larson of Mankato who had one of the two heats wins for the class on the night came home second ahead of AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie and Scott Demmer of Waseca. Demmer had the other heat win for the B Mods as it was the only class that did not see a heat winner also take home the feature win.

Racing action continues next Friday night with Hot Laps scheduled for 6:30 and racing at 7:00
