Chateau Speedway Banquet 2024 at Lansing Corners!*

Chateau Raceway 7/14/17

July 14, 2017  |  by Matthew Grage

It was another exciting night of racing action Friday Night at Chateau Raceway in Lansing. It was especially sweet for two of the seven feature winners as they picked up there first career feature wins. A third driver scored his first ever feature win at Lansing.

The Chateau Hornets were the first class to roll out there feature event. Haley Kiefer of Taopi and Kristofer Aasen of Hayfield lead the field into the green flag but it was Nick Sillman of Minnesota Lake who jumped from the outside of row three to the front on the first lap to take the early lead. Aasen fell in line second with Pat Wells of Faribault making a big move, jumping from the outside of row four up to third. A lap later Pat was in second and at the halfway point of the race found himself in the lead. His time at the front lasted just two laps however as he lost a tire going into turn three. Off the restart Sillman was back on the point and it was Cody Hyatt of Waseca lined up on his back bumper with four laps to go. They went side by side much of the rest of the race and came to the checkers with Hyatt sneaking out the win by less than a bumper. For Hyatt, who pulls double duty at the track also racing in the WISSOTA Street Stock Class, not only was it his first win of the season, it was his first career feature win. Caylie Blowers of Waseca came home third ahead of Kiefer. Corbin Giesler of West Concord rounded out the top five. The field did not run any heats on the night.

In Chateau Pure Stock action Zack Ehmke of Dexter swung to the high side out of row two to take the early lead in there main event. Troy Maas of Faribault, starting outside of row three followed him up that outside line to second as the field completed lap one. Maas stuck tight behind Zack and as the field was working lap four Ehmke went a bit high in turn two and Troy dove to the bottom and to the lead. Meanwhile current point leader in the class, Jesse Stahl of Austin was working his way thru traffic and just about the midpoint of the race he had moved up to second. Maas had built him a nice lead by that point and Jesse went to work cutting into it. With two to go the two leaders were nose to tail. Stahl took a couple runs at Troy showing himself along side the leader but was unable to make the pass. In victory lane afterwards a second driver on the night celebrated there first career feature win after many years of racing. He also had a heat win making it more special giving him a sweep for his efforts. Ehmke came home in third outdueling Daniel Guttormson of Austin and Christ Hotovec of Dodge Center. The trio may not have been racing for the win but they swapped spots and put on a good show behind the leaders. Daniel scored the classes other heat win.

The track has been hosting the Outlaw Mini Mods on an every other week schedule this year and Friday night was there week to join the show. Fifteen of them checked in making for an exciting field of cars for there feature. Taton Hansen of Spicer started on pole and lead the early laps. Several early cautions slowed the pace of the race and Hansen survived the pressure put on him on each of the restarts until the fourth one at the halfway point of the race. Ryan Hensel of Forest Wisconsin, who had a heat win earlier in the night, had been going back and forth with Bobby Gullickson of Kasson, Matt Narveson of Hayfield and Adam Ackerman in a four way battle for second. The group swapped positions several times with Hensel sitting second on that last restart. He got a gun run off that final restart pulling along side Taton and eventually moving by him and driving off to the win. It was his first career Lansing feature win and his second of the season in the traveling series. Hansen held on for second ahead of Ackerman and Gullickson. Anthony Kramer of Owatonna, who picked up a heat win on the night, came home in fifth.

Noah Grinstead of Austin scored his second feature win of the year in WISSOTA Street Stock action. After running third behind Bobby Blowers of Waseca and Fred Prudoehl of Winona for the first six laps Noah made a pair of big moves on lap seven. Starting in turns one and two he was able to get by Fred for second, he than quickly shot up on Blowers back bumper and shot by him coming out of turn four, capping a big third to first move in one lap. Blowers stuck around to come home in second ahead of Jason Newkirk of Austin. Mike Blowers of Waseca, who had a heat win on the night, finished fourth outdueling Blake Adams of McIntire Iowa for that spot. Prudoehl had the classes other heat win.

A wild first lap almost cut the WISSOTA Midwest Modified field in half as nine of the sixteen starters were involved in two separate incidents on the first lap of there feature. The tightly bunched field of cars started bouncing around in turn one and five of the cars in the middle of the field were tangled together just out of turn two as the field raced down the back straight away. As the caution came out four more cars went around together in turn four. During a lengthy caution to separate a few of the cars several cars were checked to see if they could continue and when it was all cleaned up surprisingly just two cars were unable to continue. Jesse Hernandez of Blooming Prairie grabbed the lead on the restart with Billy Steinberg of Kason running second ahead of Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa. Brayton Cisneros of Blooming Prairie, running fifth after that first lap jumped to second on lap three and went to the lead a lap later. Behind him Garritt Wytaske of Austin and Dan Wheeler of Savage had worked there way up to second and third and were having quite the battle for second behind Brayton when the leader spun in the middle of turn two. Wytaske restarted on point with four to go, but a lap later it was Dan who took over the lead. Wytaske held off Steinberg for second followed by Goergen and Ryan Wetzstein of West Concord. Wheeler also had a heat win to go with his feature win. Casey Trom of Zumbrota, who was one of the two drivers to go out in that first lap incident, took the other heat win on the night.

Kadden Kath of Owatonna scored his fourth feature win of the season in USRA B Mod action. Kadden started front row but had plenty of company all race long. AJ Zvorak of Blooming Prairie and Scott Demmer of Ellendale ran second and third just ahead of Kylie Kath as the field completed lap one. Demmer moved up to second on lap four and was making a bid for the lead two laps later when he and the leader made some contact. Scott had to lift off the contact and that allowed Kylie to move by him for second. It was brothers dueling at the front as a caution came out with five laps to go. On the restart Kylie tried to dive hard to the bottom in turn one to make a bid for the lead but the car did not stick and he went around bringing out yet another yellow. That moved Zvorak and Demmer back up on his back bumper but that’s all they saw the rest of the way. AJ won the battle for second with Nate Chodur of Lake Mills Iowa and Jayden Larson of Mankato making up the top five. Zvorak and Jett Sorensen of Rochester scored heat wins for the B Mods.

Putting a wrap on the night were the USRA A Mods. Defending Track Champion Jason Cummins of New Richland continued his dominating season with his fourth feature win of the year. In fact despite taking a week off from the track last week Cummins continues to lead the points as he looks to defend his title. Mick Glenn of Minnesota City led the early laps off the outside of the front row with Cummins coming out of row two to second on lap two. The two ran side by side for a lap before Jason finished off the pass. With most of the field running the middle or the bottom of the track the leader found the cushion more to his liking and went rim riding for the rest of the race and sailed off to the win. Eventually most of the rest of the field went to the top as well. Steve Wetzstein of West Concord, starting back in row five, put on a nice show as he worked traffic and rolled all the way up to a second place finish going by Greg Pfeifer JR of Austin for that spot on a late restart. Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie and Darwyn Karau of Kasson came home fourth and fifth. Cummins also had a heat win giving him his third sweep of the season. Pfeifer picked up a heat win on the night as well.

Next Friday Night the track will be hosting a benefit night for USRA A Mod driver Jake Stark. Jake has been racing through some health issues having been diagnosed with Stage 2 Melanoma (Skin Cancer) on his head earlier this year. Silent Auction and a 50/50 drawing are among the fund raising efforts on the night to help with the costs of dealing with the issue. More information can be found on the benefits Facebook page.
