A perfect summer day turned into a perfect summer evening for racing action at Chateau Raceway in Lansing Friday Night. Mother Nature has divided up the racing and rainouts evenly this summer with Friday night being just the eighth night of racing action up against just as many weather postponements. Seven classes of cars filled the pits for the nights action with the Outlaw Mini Mods joining the regular six classes.
Bobby Gullickson of Kasson picked up his first feature win of the year at Lansing in the Liquid Nitro Outlaw Mini Mods. It was also his first career Feature win at Chateau. Bobby does have one other feature win on the circuit this year, back in April in the series opener in New Richmond Wisconsin. Gullickson had his hands full with Mike Lawson of Owatonna for much of the race. Mike was running second the whole race keeping the heat on until the final lap. Lawson bobbled in two and let Gullickson get out ahead of him, he than tried to drive the car hard into turns three and four to make one last run at the leader but instead spun himself out as the checkers flew and he fell to the tail of the field. Matt Narveson of Hayfield took over the second spot ahead of Bruce Bennerotte of Byron. Narveson had the classes heat win.
A season high car count in the USRA A Mods saw seventeen cars take the green flag for the twenty-five lap main event. Darwyn Karau of Kasson came off the outside of the front row to grab the early lead. Behind him current points leader and defending Track Champion Jason Cummins of New Richland was sitting back in row six for the start of the race. Jason didn’t stay there long moving past four cars on the first lap to move up to seventh, swept by two more to go to fifth on lap two and was up to fourth on lap three when the first of five cautions slowed the field. Up front Karau was battling with Doug Hillson of Blooming Prairie who took advantage of Darwyn bobbling in turn two on lap seven to take the lead away. At the same time Cummins moved up to third and lap later moved past Karau for second. Following another caution Cummins found his way to the top of the track and moved around Doug for the lead. From there he drove off to his fifth feature win of the season at Lansing. Greg Pfeifer JR of Austin made a pass about midway through the race to move up to second where he finished just ahead of Hillson, Brian Shaw of Brownsdale and Steve Wetzstein of West Concord. Steve had one of the three heat wins on the night for the class with David Schuster of Waterville and Tammy Soma Clark of Rochester picking up there first wins of the year in the other two heats.
In USRA B Mod action Kadden Kath of Owatonna stretched his lead in the points race with a wire to wire win in the feature event for the class. Kath took advantage of a front row starting spot to jump to the front and stay there. Jayden Larson of Mankato stayed close over most of the race but had to settle for the runner up spot. Nate Chodur of Lake Mills Iowa outdueled Cole Denner of New Hampton Iowa for third. Denner had a heat win on the night along with Taylor Ovrebo of Wells, each picking up there first wins of the year.
Dan Wheeler of Savage has been the dominate car most nights in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified class and was again Friday Night. Wheeler scored his third sweep of the year as he scored wins in the feature as well as in his heat. Despite taking the win his car was a little worse for wear as he put it on the trailer at the end of the night. Dan had worked his way up to second after starting back in row four and was battling with Scott Simmons of Lakeville for the top spot. As the race was just past the halfway point Simmons got loose in turn two right in front of Dan as he went cross ways Dan shot down below him but that’s the direction Simmons was moving. The contact tore up the brand new body Dan had just put on this week. Both cars kept moving and no caution was thrown but Simmons lost several spots. Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa, also working from row four, made a nice run to finish second ahead of Dustin Steinbrink of Austin, Jeremy Misgen of New Richland and Billy Steinberg of Kasson. Ryan Wetzstein of West Concord had the classes other heat win.
The broom was also out in the WISSOTA Street Stock class where Mike Blowers of Waseca swept his way to a pair of wins for the third time this season. Mike jumped from the outside of row two to the front on the first lap and lead flag to flag for the win. Kory Adams of Stacyville Iowa put on a nice show as he picked his way from midpack to a runnerup finish. Zach Elward, who had the classes other heat win came home in third ahead of Jason Newkirk of Austin and Noah Grinstead of Austin.
Troy Maas of Faribault, who picked up his first career feature win two weeks ago at the last race held at Lansing, backed it up with his second career feature win Friday night in the Chateau Pure Stock class. A pair of front row starting spots had him running in clean air all night as he scored a heat win as well. Jesse Stahl, current point leader and winner of the classes other heat event worked from midpack up to second in three laps and was right there diving inside on both ends of the track but couldn’t finish the move to get by. The race was slowed by just one caution. Dan Guttormson of Austin, Christ Hotovec of Dodge Center and Beau Stevens of Albert Lea rounded out the top five.
Low car count in the Chateau Hornets relegated the field to just a feature event but that’s all Marissa Wolff of Waseca needed. Marissa sat on the pole and lead flag to flag in there caution free feature, Nick Sillman of Minnesota Lake, who started right behind Marissa in row two followed her on the start of the race and moved into second but could do nothing but watch her run off to the win. Pat Wells of Faribault came home in third ahead of Caylie Blowers and Cody Hyatt, both of Waseca.
Action will continue next Friday Night at Lansing with the track hosting the Jake Stark Benefit night. The event was suppose to be two weeks ago but because of the rainout was rescheduled for next week. Jake, 9 year veteran of the track, has competed in four different classes over the years and currently competes in the USRA A Mod Class. He’s been dealing with some Skin Cancer, Stage 2 Melanoma and fans, friends and drivers are coming together to help raise some funds for the battle.
