Chateau Speedway kicks off 63rd Anniversary season

May 10, 2019  |  by Matthew Grage

The 2019 Racing Season is Officially under way at Chateau Speedway in Lansing. Friday Nights Season Opener, sponsored by Countryside Auto of Austin and Power 96, saw a great Season Opening Crowd and Car count as everyone was anxious to see the Season get underway. The Season Opener was delayed one week after snow and rain had the Track to wet to work on and put officials behind on completing necessary upgrades to the facility. Among the changes was the realigning of the fence in front of the grandstand, as well as the Victory Lane and signage fence in the infield. The strong winds and snow from one of the Spring Storms had torn up the victory lane sign which had to be replaced for this year. The high water table this Spring made drilling post holes and installing them a challenge as the holes filled with water as officials tried to complete there work. The heavy rains this past week created more challenges as well as it had the Track saturated and officials were not able to get on the Track till late morning Friday after some much needed sunshine finally dried things out a bit. The rain also had the Cedar River up again leaving water standing in the infield creating Lake Chateau which comes and goes throughout the summer months. But with all the weather drama behind them the Track was able to kick off its 63rd Anniversary Season with all the action fans and drivers have been use to. Plenty of side by side and three wide action highlighted the seven classes which packed the pits with 101 cars.

With just two cautions through the fourteen heat events of the night the first half of the program rolled off rather rapidly. After intermission the fast pace continued as the first three Features of the night went caution free before things slowed a bit with at least two cautions in each of the final four events.

Five drivers started there Season off with clean sweeps as they garnered both there Heat and Feature wins. Leading off was Brady Krohnberg of Walters who swept to a pair of wins in pacing the Power 96 WISSOTA Pure Stocks. Brady out dueled Troy Maas of Faribault on both occasions. Troy had the lead in both events before having to settle for a pair of second place finishes. Krohnberg made a move on the outside coming out of turn four to take the lead at the white flag in the heat, than made the same move midway through the Feature again to get to the front. Michael Wick of Faribault took third in the Feature ahead of Josh Sousa of Alden and Kendra Neis of Chatfield. The field ran a caution free main event.

In the Action Builders USRA B Mod Feature defending Track Champion Kadden Kath of Owatonna took advantage of a front row spot to lead flag to flag in the second of three caution free Features. Matt Brooks of Austin drove a nice race coming from a row three starting spot to take home a second place finish. Alex Schubbe of North Mankato, who started along side Kath on the front row came home third followed by Michael Wytaske of Hartland and Scott Demmer of Ellendale. Demmer, along with Jeremy Schaufenbuel of New Hampton Iowa grabbed the classes heat wins.

In the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks Jason Newkirk had a pair of early leads turn into a pair of second place finishes. In his heat event, after the first caution of the night, he was passed by Eric Riley of Morris off the restart and in the Feature after leading for the first thirteen laps of the fifteen lap main event he lost the lead to Kory Adams of Stacyville Iowa as the duo worked thru lapped traffic. Adams, the defending Track Champion in the Class, held off Newkirk over the final 2 laps to hang on for the win. Bernie Adams of Stacyville Iowa came home third followed by Mike Blowers of Waseca and Riley. The classes other heat win went to Jesse Stahl of Austin. Stahl, defending Track Champion in the Power 96 WISSOTA Pure Stocks, was making his debut in the class.

It was a wild WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature event with Jason VandeKamp of Scandia completing a sweep with a mid race pass of Cole Anderson of Northfield. Michael Wytaske of Hartland held the early lead before he lost it to Anderson off a restart after a lap five caution. Anderson held the lead until lap ten when he went a bit high in turn four leaving the door open on the bottom for Jason to slide through. Kylie Kath of Claremont came on strong as the feature rolled on as he worked from row four to take home second late. Anderson held on for third ahead of Wytaske, who picked up a heat win on the night, and Tony Konold of Clear Lake South Dakota.

In French’s Repair USRA A Mod action it was a clean sweep for Brandon Davis of Hayfield. After leading flag to flag for his heat win he had to work from row four in the feature to score the Season Opening win. Defending Track Champion Darwyn Karau lead early before Davis caught him for the lead. Karau fell to third as Jason Cummins, working from row five came up through the field to take the runnerup spot. Taton Hansen of Spicer who finished fourth was the only other car on the lead lap at the end of the race. Dustin Brown of Thornton Iowa took home fifth. Karau had the classes other heat win.

Leading the way with the nights high car count for a single class was the Y-Waste WISSOTA Hornets with 22 cars. With two cars not making the call for the feature it still made for a very crowded twenty car Feature field. Seth Scholl of Holmen Wisconsin was top dog for the night as he scored a pair of wins leading every lap of both his heat and feature to secure the sweep. Jeremiah Anderson of La Crosse Wisconsin came home in second ahead of Jerry Coopman of Mankato, Defending Track Champion Brian Adams of Montgomery and Dirk Digger of Owatonna. Along with Scholl, Coopman and Digger took home heat wins.

Logan Brown of Clear Lake Iowa paced the KEVKO Outlaw Mini Mods for Opening Night. Brown jumped out of row two to the front on drop of the green in the Feature but didn’t lead every lap. Off a restart on lap six Ryan Hensel of Forest Wisconsin got the jump on him and lead for a lap before Logan went back to the front for the rest of the race. Things turned worse for Hensel after that as mechanical issues forced him off the track two laps later. Taton Hansen survived a late incident to come home second. Hansen, who started back in row six, had been doing a nice job of working through the field when a car spun right in front of him and collected him. After sitting in the middle of the track for a few moments he was able to continue and come home in the runnerup spot. Jerry Larson, who came down from Grand Rapids came home third followed by Bobby Ruehlow of Mason City Iowa and Nick Hauge of Mason City Iowa. The classes other heat win belonged to defending Track Champion Nathan Kilwine. Kilwine came from the back of his heat to score his win and was making a good run through the field again in the Feature before mechanical issues sent him to the pits.

The Season Opener was just the first of what promises to be a very exciting summer at the track. The schedule features 22 race nights running through the two night 2nd Annual Autumn Extravaganza at the end of September. Several exciting specials are on the schedule for the year including two big ones coming up the end of this month. Memorial Day weekend has 2 big shows. Friday Night May 24th the track will host the “Toot Trucking IMCA Stock Car Shootout” with a $1000 to win Main Event. Then on Sunday Night, May 26th, at 6:00 it will be the “Spirit of 83 Memorial”. The Memorial is the continuation of the “Mike Guttormson Memorial” which has been run Memorial Day weekend since the former Track Champion and WISSOTA 100 Champion passed away in 1997 after winning his final Feature race at the track. The event, which was run as part of a regular Friday Night show in the past, will now have its own night. USRA A Mod drivers will be running for at least $1600 to win on that Sunday Night in the Memorial Feature Event. Wrapping up the month of May on the 31st will be the popular Kids Night with youngsters getting a chance to climb in one of the cars and take a lap around the track prior to the races that night. There are also Bike Giveaways planned for that night.
