Chateau Speedway (Lansing, MN) 6/28/19 Matthew Grage
Chateau Speedway and Mother Nature seem to be coming to some sort of agreement. Rain heavy on Thursdays, maybe sprinkle a bit on Friday but leave Friday Night dry so the show can go on. Friday Nights program was Sponsored by Albert Lea Steel and “The Dirt Show”, a popular regional show featuring interviews with drivers nationally as well as locally. This week 106 cars packed the pits for a full night of racing action featuring twenty-one events spread out over the seven classes of cars.
Leading the way with a season high car count of twenty cars were the Action Builders USRA B Mods who were lead by Dustin Steinbrink of Austin who picked up just his second career Feature win at Lansing and first in the USRA B Mods. His previous Feature win was in a WISSOTA Midwest Modified near the end of the 2008 Season. After picking up his first win of the year in his heat earlier in the night he backed it up with a flag to flag run in the main event. Starting front row with Noah Grinstead of Austin, Dustin took the lead on the first lap. Grinstead stayed tight as the field worked through a trio of cautions. On the third caution, Jett Sorensen of Rochester who was running third at the time suddenly pulled into the infield before the restart with mechanical issues. Also running in the top five for a time and falling out with mechanical issues was last weeks feature winner Parker Hale of Grand Meadow. When things finally sorted out it was Cole Denner of New Hampton Iowa out dueling Grinstead for second while Kadden Kath of Owatonna and Scott Splittstoesser of Cottage Grove made up the back half of the top five. Also claiming heat wins on the night were Denner and Matt Brooks of Austin.
Matching their season high car count were the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks who dueled back and forth the entire Feature before Kory Adams of Stacyville Iowa pocketed his third Feature win of the season. Fred Prudoehl of Winona held the early lead before he was shuffled back off a restart following a caution on lap three. Jason Newkirk of Austin came out of that scramble with the lead followed by Adams. Kory waited about two laps before pouncing and taking over the top spot. Braden Brauer of Rochester, making his first visit to the track this year worked out of row three and eventually took the runner up spot. Newkirk crossed in third ahead of Dustin Doughty of Oakdale and Jesse Stahl of Austin. Current point leader Zach Elward of Hayfield had an up and down night. After taking the win in his heat race he slid off the end of the track and nearly rolled his car over, than in the feature after moving into third place looped it in turn four. The best he could rebound to was an eighth place finish. Doughty had the other heat win on the night.
Jacob Dahle of Morristown took advantage of a couple front row starting spots to capture a pair of wins in the French’s Repair USRA A Mods. He came off the outside of the front row to claim his heat win and started on the pole for the main event as he saw nothing but daylight ahead of him all night. Dahle had plenty of company as among others he had current point leader Brandon Davis of Hayfield, Jason Cummins of New Richland, Darwyn Karau of Kasson and Tony Schill of Oakdale all taking turns trying to make a run on him. In the end it was Davis who chased him across the finish line ahead of Schill. Nate Wasmund of Pine Island came home in fourth followed by Joe Horgdahl of Kasson. Karau fell out early with issues and Cummins while running second suddenly slowed and as he pulled off the track and into the pits a big flume of smoke told the story of his night. Along with Dahle, Taylor Ausrud of Hayfield claimed a heat win.
WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were lead for the second time in three weeks by Ryan Wetzstein of West Conocrd. Starting back in row three Ryan ran fifth on lap one as Christopher Deno of Kasson took the early lead. Wetzstein picked his way forward over the next six laps eventually going to the lead on lap seven. The big move came off a restart after a lap six caution. Deno brought them in for the restart and the second row split him with Wetzstein going top shelf and Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa dropping all the way to the bottom. Wetzstein would take the lead and not look back. Deno held on for second ahead of Eric Lamm who made the haul down from Zimmerman. Jeremy Misgen of New Richland and Daryl Hainka of Wannamingo made up the top five. Goergen was in and out of the pits on one of the races cautions and could only manage making it back up to seventh while current point leader Kylie Kath of Claremont had mechanical issue bite him after he had moved up to second with just a hand full of laps left. Deno and Kath scored the heat wins for the class. Brayten Cisneros of Blooming Prairie tore up his car in his heat when he got ahold of the wall in turn four and ended up on his top.
Brady Krohnberg of Walters took the week off last week but brought his broom with him Friday Night as he cleaned up in the Power 96 WISSOTA Pure Stock class. Brady started deep in the field in both his races and worked his car forward patiently to claim the wins. In the heat he scored the pass in the final laps for the win while it was midrace when he went to the front in the Feature. Michael Wick of Faribault had the early lead ahead of Andrew Eischen’s of Taopi. Krohnberg was able to pick his spots and moved to the front on lap seven. Wick out dueled Eischen’s and Troy Maas of Faribault who had a wild three car battle for the runnerup spot. Kyndra Neis of Chatfield rounded out the top five in the caution free main event.
In KEVKO Outlaw Mini Mod action Davis Royle of Northfield was looking for his first feature win of the season as he built himself a pretty nice lead In the early going of the main event. Logan Brown of Clear Lake Iowa however had other ideas as he came on in the final five laps to grab his second feature win of the year. Royle took second ahead of Anthony Kramer of Owatonna, Nathan Kilwine of Glenville and Tanner Prehn of Forest City Iowa. Brown also had a heat win on the night with Kilwine also taking a checkered flag in the first half of the nights action.
A late arriving bunch of Y Waste WISSOTA Hornets made for an interesting night for the class. By the time the all checked shortly before there heats were run there was twenty-two of them, matching there season high car count. Despite the crowded track the field was slowed by just three cautions, one of which was a debris caution. The race featured another three wide battle for the lead on the first lap. Caylie Blowers of Waseca started on the pole with Nate Coopman of Mankato on the outside of her. Jerry Coopman of Mankato started inside row three and on the drop of the green went all the way to the bottom and he, Caylie and Nate went three wide into turn one. When they came around to complete lap one it was Nate and Jerry running one and two. Bailey Wolff of Janesville made her way up to third as the laps clicked off. Daniel Knish of Kilkenny who has a trio of Feature wins on the year made a charge with five laps to go and took over the top spot. However with two laps to go Nate made a stronger move to go back to the point and held on for his first feature win of the season. Knish took second ahead of Jerry Coopman, Bailey and Blowers.
The Track also hosted a Cancer Benefit Fund Raiser for one of its long time friends and current track employee Dave Braaten. Dave is in the middle of a tough battle against the Big C and family and friends came together and showed there support. There was a big silent auction for many items which were donated including a couple of door panels. The 50/50 drawing was a big success with almost $2800 being split . Anyone still wishing to donate can message the track on there facebook page.
Next Friday Night the track will continue its tradition of a Big Fireworks Display on the Fourth of July Weekend. It will be a special pricing event with a bit of a twist. Grandstand Admission will be $12 instead of the usual $10. However the track in taking up another cause will be letting people in for the regular $10 price if they bring two Non-Perishable Food Items for the Local Food Shelf. Fourth of July is a great time to celebrate but to also help others out who could use a helping hand. So the track is really hoping everyone will still be paying the normal $10 price which would mean a great night of community service is accomplished as well.
