The Summer of 2019 Continues to be Hot and So Does the Racing at Chateau Speedway

July 27, 2019

Chateau Speedway (Lansing, MN)  7/26/19                                                                                                           Matthew Grage

Temperatures didn’t make the 90’s this week but mid-80’s still felt plenty warm for week eleven of racing action at Chateau Speedway in Lansing Friday Night.   The nights program was sponsored by Jay Kleemensen at Eagle Prairie Insurance in Blooming Prairie and the Austin Bruins.   “Bruiser” the Austin Bruins Mascot was on hand to greet fans and take pictures with the kids.  A pair of drivers picked up there first feature wins of the season and some thrilling finishes made for some exciting races.

One Feature race however that was set up for a thrilling finish turned rather anti-climactic after a late caution.  The French’s Repair USRA A Mod Main Event was setting to be a three car battle between Jason Cummins of New Richland, Brandon Davis of Hayfield and Steve Wetzstein of West Concord.   Davis took the early lead off the front row while Cummins moved into second out of row two.  Wetzstein meanwhile started back in row three and had to work a  bit to get up into the top three finally getting there just before half way.  By than the leaders were working traffic.  Davis had opened up a nice cushion in the early laps before Cummins reeled him in just before they caught the back of the field.  Cummins would watch how Davis would attack the slower car and go the opposite way.  If Brandon went high to try to lap a car Jason would try to go low or jus the opposite if Davis went low Jason would go to the top.  With less than five laps left Davis went low out of turn four to pass a car and Jason went top shelf and rocketed around both to the front.  While the two of them dealt with cars and each other Wetzstein was closing up on the two in a hurry.  He caught them with just over two to go and as he they cleared a car to the outside he went to the bottom and it was set up for a wild three car battle to the checkers.  However in the middle of  turn four Steve ended up sideways and was tagged for the caution.   He briefly protested the call before heading off the track.  Whether he over drove the car or was pinched by the lapped car really didn’t matter because it eliminated what could have been a great finish.  Instead it was a short single file restart with three laps to go and Cummins was able to pull away from Davis for his second feature win of the season.  Joe Horgdahl of Kasson came home third ahead of Kevin Stoa of Albert Lea and Joel Alberts of Mantorville.  Heat wins went to Davis and Blake Aarndt of Brownsdale.

In Action Builders USRA B Mod action Tucker Williams of Rochester scored his first Career Chateau Speedway Feature win.  Tucker and Taylor Ovrebo of Wells lined up on the front row for the main event with Taylor leading a little more than the first half of the race.  Williams made several runs at Ovrebo using the outside line several times to try and make the move for the lead, but it was the inside line on lap twelve that proved to be the winning combination.  Once he got to the front he stretched out the lead to score the win.  Kadden Kath of Owatonna made his way up to second but had to settle for the runner up spot.  Noah Grinstead of Austin, Cole Denner of New Hampton Iowa and Kobie Kath of Owatonna made up the rest of the top five.  Williams also had a heat win on the night giving him a sweep.  Meanwhile Kadden and Denner took the classes other heat wins.

The Power 96 Pure Stocks have been making it a habit of running caution free features this year and raced thru yet another one on Friday night.  Brandon Shaner of Owatonna who was making his first appearance of the season at the track rocketed from row three to the front on the drop of the green flag.  Only problem was he pulled out of line early and was called for jumping the start.  The track does not throw a caution in these instances instead docking the driver two spots on the next caution or at the end of the race.  It was looking like it was going to be a tough moment if he stayed up front but Jack Maas of Faribault reeled him in and made the clean pass for the lead just over halfway thru the race.  Jack went on to win his second feature win of the year and Shaner who crossed in second was scored as fourth.  Troy Maas of Faribault was credited for second ahead of Andrew Eischens of Taopi.  Than it was Shaner followed  by Michael Wick of Faribault.  Shaner did have the classes lone heat win earlier in the night.

Also running a Caution Free Main Event were the Y Waste WISSOTA Hornets and for the second week in a row Aaron Reimers of Prior Lake had his shot at getting his first Feature win snatched away late by Justin Schelitzche of Cologne.  Reimers had worked from row three to pass Matt Wieman of Owatonna for the top spot on lap six only to have Justin come up thru the field from row four and grab the win instead.  It was Schelitzche’s third Feature win of the year.  Wieman held on for third ahead of Matt Tighe of Austin and TJ Pearson of Burnsville.  Heat winners on the night for the class were Reimers and Schlelitzche.

Not to be outdone were the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks who put together eighteen laps of non stop action in there main event.  Fred Prudoehl of Winona took the early lead off the front row but surrendered the top spot to Zach Elward of Hayfield five laps in.  Keith Tourville of Janesville, making his first appearance of the year at the track worked his way up to second and was able to make several runs along side Elward but could never seal the deal.  Zach went on to score his track leading seventh feature win of the year and his third sweep after he also claimed one of the classes heat wins on the night.  Kory Adams of Stacyville Iowa fought from a row four starting spot up to third, just ahead of Braden Brauer of Eyota and Jesse Stahl of Austin.  Bernie Adams of Stacyville Iowa had the classes other heat win.

WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had about as close as you can come to a caution free feature with out actually getting one.  A short yellow for a first lap spin was all that slowed the field as they restarted and kept it clean the rest of the way.  Jeremy Misgen of New Richland took the early on lap one before giving it up to Ryan Goergen of Stacyville Iowa on lap three.  Two laps later the third leader in the races first five laps became Cory Asmussen of Waseca.    Cory would make sure there was no fourth leader of the race as he lead the field the final fifteen laps all the way to victory lane as he became the second driver on the night to pick up his first Career Chateau Speedway Feature Win.  Ryan Wetzstein of West Conocrd put on quite a show in coming home second.  After picking up a flat tire and falling out of his heat he was stuck starting the feature in row eight.  Wetzstein moved from the sixteenth starting spot on the grid to sixth in the first three laps.  Ryan than oved into the top five a lap later and up to fourth just past halfway.  He than jumped two spots a lap later up to second on lap fourteen, but with just six laps left and no cautions to regroup the field all he had time to do was close down the gap some between him and the leader.  Misgen ended up third ahead of Kylie Kath of Claremont and Goergen.  Heat wins on the night for the class went to Kath and Dan Wheeler of Savage.

Up next for The Track is another big weekend.  There will be seven classes of cars next Friday Night with the KEVKO Outlaw Mini Mods on the schedule again next week for the 7:15 race time.   Than Track Employees will once again be making the trip up to the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Kasson on Sunday for the rescheduled Thunderbird Open from the rained out event at the Dodge County Fair.  The night will be a complete new show with all results from the few heats that ran being thrown out.  Drivers will redraw for positions.  The nights action will be open to all drivers whether they were there originally or not.  Draw – Cut Off will be at 5:00 pm with the Pit Meeting at 5:30.  Hot Laps will follow the Meeting with Racing scheduled to get underway at 6:00pm.  The nights program will feature a $1500 to win “A Mod” Feature as well as nice purses for the two different “B Mod” classes, Street Stock class, and Hornet Class.   The program is unsanctioned but drivers will have to follow the rules set forth by whatever body there a part of.  “A Mods” can be either USRA, WISSOTA or IMCA, while the B Mods will be divided between WISSOTA Midwest Mod and a combined USRA/IMCA classe.  Street Stocks and Hornets will be following the WISSOTA Rule Book with Hornets being allowed the phase-in rule for Chateau Speedway.
