Chateau Speedway kicks off Fourth of July Weekend with exciting racing action

July 1, 2022  |  by Matthew Grage

There was plenty of action Friday night at the Chateau Speedway powered by Garlick’s Water as six classes of cars provided the fireworks to kick off the Fourth of July Weekend.

Two of the six classes have had a different feature winner every week so all eyes were on the French’s Repair USRA Modifieds and the Manke’s Outdoor Hornets to see if those streaks would continue. And as it turned out they would.

In the USRA Modifieds, Ryan Wetzstein of West Concord claimed his first feature win of the season by 0.056 second over Jason Cummins of New Richland.

Wetzstein led the first several laps before slipping up high in turn 4 on lap 8 to let A.J. Zvorak of Blooming Prairie slip by, but a lap later in a three-wide scramble into turn 3 with Zvorak in the middle of him and Cummins he went back to the point.

Cummins stayed close and made a big push to the inside coming to the checkers that came up just short. Wetzstein also took over the points lead with the win. Cummins had one of the heat wins on the night with the other going to Cole Anderson of Le Center.

Chad Schroeder of Belle Plaine became another first time feature winner this summer as he took the Skjeveland Sanitation USRA Stock Car main event. Travis Shipman of Mason City, Iowa, who has three feature wins in the class this year, led the first lap as the two cars ran side-by-side for the first three laps.

Schroeder had the advantage on lap 2 at the line and maintained the lead the rest of the way. Shipman stayed on his back bumper the entire race looking for an opening that never came.

Chris Adams of McIntire Iowa took third. Kevin Vogt of Rose Creek had the lone heat win.

Michael Johnson of Rose Creek picked up his second feature win of the year in the Double M Transport USRA B Mods. Johnson started in row five and had worked his way up to third when a caution came out on lap 8. A big push on the restart saw him leap frog to the lead on lap nine and he stayed there the rest of the way.

Noah Grinstead of Austin held off Hunter Kennedy of St. Ansgar, Iowa, for second. Kennedy and Scott Demmer of Ellendale had wins in the two heat races.

In the Hornet class it was a first time visitor to the track this year Mike Chadderdon who saw victory lane for the first time as he worked from row three to the front on lap 3 and set sail for the win over Colin Wittenberg of Hastings. Maison Poston of Red Wing and Brandon Blanchard of Chester Iowa scored the classes heat wins.

Power 96 Pure Stocks saw Troy Maas of Faribault pick up his first feature win of the year. He became the fourth different feature winner in the classes six weeks of action. Troy started on the pole and stayed out front from start to finish outdistancing PJ Duchene of Faribault and Devyn Deyo of Chatfield. Deyo took one of the classes two heat wins with the other going to Joshua Bentzen of Owatonna.

In Hanson Tire WISSOTA Midwest Modified action Jake Smith of St. Joseph scored his second feature win of the season. Smith caught a break when early race leader Kadden Kath of Ellendale spun while leading. Jake took over the lead and went on to score a sweep as he also saw the checkers fall his way in his heat, Greg Pfeifer Junior of Austin came home in second. Kath did pick up a heat win on the night.
